Do Your Expectations Match Your Commitment Levels?

Shaun Kober: Essentially, I'm putting it back on my clients. I'm always putting it back on my clients, man.

Will Foden: I'd say this is the best thing we talked about the last time you were in Singapore.

Shaun Kober: Haha yeah. The client comes in and goes, "Hey, I want to lose 10 kilos." And you go....

"Cool. How committed are you on a scale of one to 10 to achieving these goals of losing 10 kilos?".

They're like, "I'm a 10 man. I'm ready to roll. I'm going to change everything. I'm going to change my lifestyle. I'm going to smash myself with training and take all these supplements, and...blah, blah, blah."

And it's like, "All right, are you willing to track your food?".

They're like, "Aagh, I tried that before. Didn't really like doing it." "Okay. Now you're a nine. Are you willing to track your steps throughout the day?"

At the end of the day, we need to make sure that we're manipulating energy balance. We need to know what your energy consumption is, and your energy expenditure so we can make those adjustments, otherwise, we're just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.

"Right, so if you're not willing to track your food, now you're a nine. If you're not willing to track your steps and your daily movement, now you're an eight. If you're not willing to get eight hours of sleep, seven and a half to eight hours sleep a night, now you're a seven. If you're not willing to drink three litres of water a day, now you're a six. If you're not willing to eat five servings of vegetables a day, now you're five. Not willing to eat two servings of fruit? Now you're a four."

So you can just go through those important things...whatever's important to you as a coach. And like, that's literally mine, man. And what you'll find is people are actually a level three or a four. I'm like, cool.

"I need you to under

stand that you're coming in with these level three commitments, you need to expect level three results."

A big part of our job as coaches is expectation management. It's not being an arsehole. But it is telling the people the hard truth about what's required for them to actually achieve what they said they want to do.

If they're not willing to do that, that's cool, we meet them where they are, and we guide them towards creating the biggest change with the least amount of initial effort, whilst stacking one percenters over sustained periods of time.
